For nearly all infants, breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition and immunologic protection. Breastfeeding offers physical and psychological health benefits to infant and mother as well. Despite the overwhelming benefits of breastfeeding, the rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration in the United States fall short of the recommended six months to two years. Barriers to breastfeeding include negative attitudes of mother or family toward breastfeeding, lack of assistance and support, certain cultural beliefs and practices, inadequate healthcare and education, and lactation issues, among other things. Despite these positive aspects, breastfeeding is sometimes contraindicated. Promoting breastfeeding as the exclusive feeding method for infants is a public health priority. Many associations are involved that can educate healthcare professionals on optimal breastfeeding practices, encourage information exchange and research, and expand knowledge of human lactation.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide dietitians with information about benefits of, contraindications to, and trends regarding breastfeeding. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the benefits of breastfeeding to patients and clients
  • Discuss the infant and maternal health conditions in which breastfeeding is contraindicated
  • Explain breastfeeding trends and barriers
