Summary:

Food wars are every caregiver’s nightmare. It is not unusual for a toddler to exhibit a number of feeding behaviors that parents consider problematic. Food jags, refusal to try new foods, or sensitivity to the sensory properties of food is common. For a small group of children, food restriction can be indicative of a developmental or medical issue. Strategies to address limited diets include identifying age-appropriate textures and portion sizes for toddlers, establishing regular mealtimes to capitalize on a child’s hunger, and introducing new foods in conjunction with familiar foods. Parents can support expanding food choice by modeling positive eating habits, creating consistency in mealtime routine and expectations, and offering developmentally appropriate and health-promoting foods while supporting the child’s development and emerging independence.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals’ knowledge of basic nutrition for the well child and ability to handle problematic feeding behaviors. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List three developmental, social, and physiological causes of picky eating
  • Discuss four key nutrients in the diets of toddlers
  • Identify two red flags in either diet or behavior that require referral for further intervention
  • List four realistic strategies to address toddlers’ picky eating
