Summary:

Would you be surprised to learn that choline intake is inadequate in 90% of the U.S. population? Certain groups are of particular concern: women of childbearing age and men and women older than age 70. Since choline was only identified as an essential nutrient in 1998 and the first United States Department of Agriculture database containing the choline content of food was not published until 2004, the study of choline consumption and the effect of low intakes on health was difficult to determine. Newer research has shown that common genetic differences called polymorphisms make people susceptible to choline deficiency and affect as much as 50% of the population. There is an increasing need to raise awareness of suboptimal intakes of choline to healthcare professionals and consumers and a need to counsel clients and patients to include choline-rich foods in their diets.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nutrition professionals with information about the role of choline and raise awareness of the lack of choline in most Americans’ diets. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the essential role of choline and explain how a low choline intake can have long-term effects on health
  • Discuss the problem of low choline intake for large portions of the U.S. population
  • Identify foods that are rich in choline
