Summary:

Is green tea living up to its reputation as a panacea for a number of diseases? During the past 30 years, green tea has exploded in popularity. Americans drink about 150 million gallons of green tea every year, and the extract is available in hundreds of supplements. Green tea has been used as a medicinal tool in Asian cultures for centuries, and recently it has gained notoriety as an antioxidant, offering protection against cancer, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular problems, hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity. Many studies show that the phytochemicals in green tea confer health benefits to those who ingest them, yet key questions remained unanswered. This course describes the different kinds of teas, why green tea has been studied for its potential health benefits, and current research conclusions about the potential power of this popular beverage.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education course about green tea is to understand its potential health benefits, the limitations of these benefits, and what research has and has not been performed to investigate these claims. After completing this course, you will be able to:
  • Define functional food and phytochemical, and explain why green tea is considered a functional food/beverage
  • Identify the major phenols found in green and black tea and discuss at least three purported mechanisms by which tea protects against cardiovascular disease
  • Summarize and convey to clients and consumers the evidence-based health benefits of green tea and make appropriate recommendations regarding the consumption of green tea
