Summary:

Pinworms are the most prevalent type of parasitic intestinal infection in the United States. Pharmacists will likely encounter this type of infection in their practice and must be able to recommend appropriate therapy and counsel patients accordingly. Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) are often diagnosed in pediatric patients but can affect all age groups. The most common symptom associated with this infection is perianal itching, but pinworms can present with other symptoms and mimic other conditions. The medications used to treat these infections include mebendazole (Emverm), albendazole (Albenza), or pyrantel pamoate (Reese’s Pinworm Medicine, Pin-X). Proper handwashing and hygiene are recommended ways to prevent infection. Pharmacists and other healthcare providers should be knowledgeable on the presentation of this infection and its treatment.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to provide healthcare professionals with knowledge regarding the presentation, etiology, identification, and treatment of pinworm infections. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the life cycle of the pinworm and how it relates to reinfection of individuals
  • Recognize the typical and atypical presentations of pinworm infections
  • Compare the three available treatments for pinworm infections and make appropriate recommendations for therapy
