Summary:

How do you treat a syndrome that people do not know they have? Hypertension is called the silent killer. With many unaware of their condition, it is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The 2017 guideline for hypertension prevention and management lowered the threshold for a diagnosis of hypertension. This means that in the future even more people will be diagnosed with hypertension than are now. There are preventive steps to reduce hypertension through lifestyle modifications such as weight loss, dietary changes, limited alcohol intake, and exercise. Despite the large volume of research devoted to hypertension, controversy still exists regarding the benefits of maintaining systolic blood pressure under 120 mmHg, and sodium intake as low as 1,500 mg/day. While lifestyle modifications are successful, many Americans with hypertension will require pharmacological treatment. In this course, you will learn the proven treatments and the areas of controversy.

Objectives:

The goal of this course is to provide relevant and updated information on hypertension including prevalence, effect on overall health, risk factors, prevention, and treatment. After reading this educational activity, you will be able to:
  • List lifestyle modifications that have a favorable effect on blood pressure
  • Describe the systolic and diastolic values for hypertension and list medications used to treat it
  • Describe the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating pattern and apply it to the diet of a person with high blood pressure
  • Identify foods that are lower in sodium and high in potassium

It was a little more technical than other studies I have read. It took a few times to read and sometimes get it. Thought a few of the questions were more "tricky" than other test questions I've answered. I did learn quite a bit about BP though and how it is affected by lifestyle factors.
