Summary:

Most patients with cancer will experience pain during the course of their illness and into survivorship. Cancer pain may escalate as the disease progresses, so frequent adjustments in pain management strategies are often necessary to achieve optimal results. Although relief is possible for most cancer pain, many patients will suffer needlessly from discomfort due to mismanagement and undertreatment that can occur due to common misconceptions among providers. Healthcare professionals can work together as a team to help alleviate this suffering by correcting fallacies about cancer pain and applying the principles of effective pain management and research-based interventions.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to clarify healthcare professionals’ understanding of cancer pain and its clinical management. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify five common misconceptions that result in ineffective pain management
  • Compare definitions for addiction, physical dependence, and tolerance
  • Discuss the responsibilities of healthcare professionals in oncology pain management
