Summary:

Acute compartment syndrome is a complex, limb-threatening, abdominal compartment life-threatening condition that requires prompt and accurate diagnosis and immediate treatment. Because it is relatively uncommon, it is necessary to be alert for the signs and symptoms to allow for prompt management. This module outlines the causes, diagnostics, and treatments for ACS.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to optimize healthcare providers’ ability to detect people at risk for developing acute compartment syndrome and to care for patients with this condition. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the physiological, surgical, and anesthesia cause of acute compartment syndrome
  • List the “six Ps” that comprise the signs and symptoms of neurovascular and muscular compromise
  • Cite the compartment syndrome risk in different anatomic locations
  • Describe compartment syndrome treatment

Great refresher for information that I have not seen since college. Even then, it was presented for athletic injuries and not injuries such as crush injuries.
